Journey Into The Promised Land

Matthew 21:17–27 (CSB)

17 Then he left them, went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there.

THE BARREN FIG TREE

18 Early in the morning, as he was returning to the city, he was hungry. 19 Seeing a lone fig tree by the road, he went up to it and found nothing on it except leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!” At once the fig tree withered.

20 When the disciples saw it, they were amazed and said, “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?”

21 Jesus answered them, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you tell this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will be done. 22 And if you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”

THE AUTHORITY OF JESUS CHALLENGED

23 When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching and said, “By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority?”

24 Jesus answered them, “I will also ask you one question, and if you answer it for me, then I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25 Did John’s baptism come from heaven, or was it of human origin?”

They discussed it among themselves, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ we’re afraid of the crowd, because everyone considers John to be a prophet.” 27 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

An Unlimited God

The will of God is a tremendous thing. You can’t change it. It is already written. It is attested to with the blood of our Savior. Through His death, He has left us the legacy of the complete destruction of the works of Satan in our lives. Heaven’s highest court will see that this will is enforced as we step out to claim its provisions.

Before we can demonstrate the power of God in our lives, we must have our faith tied to a known factor. Those who pray, “If it be thy will…” do not have their faith tied to a known fact. The Bible declares:

But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering, For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. (James 1:6-7)

We must know how to pray in faith believing:

And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. (Matthew 21:22)

It is not enough, Hebrews tells us, just to believe God exists. We must also believe that He rewards those who diligently seek Him:

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Hebrews 11:6)

We can pray with authority only when we know that we know that we know that we know that we know! We must know that — no matter what some preachers may say — God does not put sickness and evil upon us. He permits them as in Job’s case, but He does not send them upon His children!

The centurion who asked Jesus to heal his servant told the Lord, “It is totally unnecessary for You to come to my house.” He knew that if it was God’s will for his servant to be healed, there was only one thing needed to make that healing a reality. This soldier had grasped one of the greatest truths that God has given my ministry. It is this: The God that we serve is a God who knows no limit!

One of the greatest reasons why we limit an unlimited God, is because we do not see Him as He is. The centurion saw Jesus as He was. He said to Jesus, “You don’t have to come to my house. Stand right here and speak the word only and my servant shall be healed.”

Jesus was moved to such a great extent by the centurion’s declaration of faith that He said, “There never has been any greater faith in all the world than that which this man has demonstrated.”

Make this declaration:

I serve an unlimited God. His unlimited power is resident within me.
