Overcoming Defeat

Journey Into The Promised Land

Ephesians 2:11–22 (CSB)

UNITY IN CHRIST

11 So, then, remember that at one time you were Gentiles in the flesh—called “the uncircumcised” by those called “the circumcised,” which is done in the flesh by human hands. 12 At that time you were without Christ, excluded from the citizenship of Israel, and foreigners to the covenants of promise, without hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus, you who were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he is our peace, who made both groups one and tore down the dividing wall of hostility. In his flesh, 15 he made of no effect the law consisting of commands and expressed in regulations, so that he might create in himself one new man from the two, resulting in peace. 16 He did this so that he might reconcile both to God in one body through the cross by which he put the hostility to death. 17 He came and proclaimed the good news of peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So, then, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with the saints, and members of God’s household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building, being put together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you are also being built together for God’s dwelling in the Spirit.

Moving From Static To Active

God is not only big enough to take care of the entire universe, but He is also interested in the smallest details of your life. He is concerned about you personally.

Spiritual progress is impossible without a personal relationship with God. In the Old Testament, the relationship was through the symbols of the Temple and the priesthood, but today our personal relationship with God is directly through Jesus Christ, His Son. Before Christ, the relationship had to be through symbols. As the sacrifice for sin was imperfect, there always was a wall or partition, a middleman, between God and man. Now that Jesus removed the middle wall or partition we can boldly enter into the Holy of Holies and make known our requests to God in prayer (Ephesians 2:14).

If Jehoshaphat could speak of the Lord in such a personal way and He only knew Him by His acts — the symbols of the Temple and priesthood and the shadows of the law of Moses — how much more should our faith be lifted up to believe God for the impossible.

Our relationship is no longer through an intermediary, nor is our salvation and the remission of our sins through the shedding of the blood of bulls and goats, but through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ. If Jehoshaphat was able to touch God with such a prayer, we have the potential for far greater victories for the Kingdom of God.

Jehoshaphat continues his prayer: “Are not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend forever?” (2 Chronicles 20:7) This is the turning point of this great prayer. Here is the transition from just the fact of Who God was to what the Lord God had done. Now we are moving from the static to the active. By remembering not only Who God was but what He had done, Jehoshaphat was moving from wishful thinking to positive action.

It is one thing to wait and another thing to move. Your faith can grow by recounting the historical acts of God, which we have already mentioned, but do not stop there because that is only the beginning.

Beloved, I believe this is the day when God wants you to move beyond recounting what He has done for you in the past to recognizing who He is in the present. You must move from the static to the active.

Make this declaration:

Today, I will move beyond recounting what God has done for me in the past to recognizing who He is in the present. I will move from the static to the active.
