High Holy Days
FEAST of TRUMPETS
Yom HaTeruah
9/18/20 – 9/28/20
The Ten Days of Repentance.
This feast starts with Rosh HaShanah and ends with Yom Kippur.
Rosh HaShanah is sometimes referred to as the Day of Judgment. Jesus said he has the authority to judge people (John 5:24–27) and the apostle Paul referred to him as the judge of “the living and the dead” (2 Tim. 4:1).
God does have a book of life; Revelation 21:27 calls it the “Lamb’s book of life.” The only way to have one’s name inscribed in it is through faith in Jesus as Savior from sin, and then it is permanent (John 10:27–30).
Those whose names are not in the book will be judged and sentenced to hell: “Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire” (Rev. 20:15).
DAY of ATONEMENT
Yom Kippur
9/28/20
Atonement is the reconciliation of God to humankind.
In the temple, The Holy of Holies was separated from the congregation by a veil from the ceiling to the floor. It was entered once a year on Yom Kippur when the high priest offered the blood sacrifice of atonement on behalf of the people. When Jesus died on the cross, the thick veil was ripped from top to bottom (Luke 23:44–46).
Jesus came as the high priest and entered the Holy of Holies once for all, not by the blood of goats and calves but by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption (Heb. 9:11–28).
Believers in Jesus accept his sacrifice on the cross as the final atonement for sin, “being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 3:21–25).
FEAST of BOOTHS (or TABERNACLES)
Sukkot
10/2/20 – 10/9/20
A week-long celebration of the fall harvest.
It is a reminder of God’s faithfulness and protection.
Two ceremonies were part of the last day of Sukkot:
(1) Giant golden lampstands were lit in the temple courtyard, and people carrying torches marched around the temple, then set these lights around the walls of the temple, indicating that Messiah would be a light to the Gentiles (Isa. 49:6).
(2) A priest carried water from the pool of Siloam to the temple, symbolizing that when Messiah comes the whole earth will know God “as the waters cover the sea” (Isa. 11:9).
When Jesus attended the Feast of Tabernacles, on the last day of the feast, he said, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him” (John 7:37–38). The next morning while the torches were still burning, he said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12).
Sukkot represents the final harvest when all nations will share in the joy and blessings of God’s kingdom. During that time, all believers will celebrate this feast (Zech. 14:16–19).

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time, 7 casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you. 8 Be sober-minded, be alert. Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour. 9 Resist him, firm in the faith, knowing that the same kind of sufferings are being experienced by your fellow believers throughout the world.

19 Look, I have given you the authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy; nothing at all will harm you.

Prayer
12 And from the days of John the Baptist until the present time, the kingdom of heaven has endured violent assault, and violent men seize it by force [as a precious prize—a share in the heavenly kingdom is sought with most ardent zeal and intense exertion].
