Giving
Malachi 3:8–12 (CSB)
8 “Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing me!”
“How do we rob you?” you ask.
“By not making the payments of the tenth and the contributions. 9 You are suffering under a curse, yet you—the whole nation—are still robbing me. 10 Bring the full tenth into the storehouse so that there may be food in my house. Test me in this way,” says the LORD of Armies. “See if I will not open the floodgates of heaven and pour out a blessing for you without measure. 11 I will rebuke the devourer, for you, so that it will not ruin the produce of your land and your vine in your field will not fail to produce fruit,” says the LORD of Armies. 12 “Then all the nations will consider you fortunate, for you will be a delightful land,” says the LORD of Armies.
Scripture
Matthew 5:31 (CSB)
31 “It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife must give her a written notice of divorce.
Matthew 5:27–32 (CSB)
ADULTERY BEGINS IN THE HEART
27 “You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery., 28 But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
DIVORCE PRACTICES CENSURED
31 “It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife must give her a written notice of divorce. 32 But I tell you, everyone who divorces his wife, except in a case of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Be aware when you abruptly see apostasy. How will you acknowledge it, sound the alarm, and remain faithful?
In the last 2 weeks we have seen some disturbing things in our nation. Stacked upon the pandemic is the tragic death of George Floyd and the lawlessness that continues after.
God created man.
There is no statement of race, religion, occupation, association, political party… God created man – period. And He created them in His image, male and female.
God has also described how we are to walk in His creation.
To act justly, – is to do what is right in God’s eyes.
To love faithfulness, – or mercy or kindness – it is the kindness of men towards men. It holds the feeling of joint obligation with God and loyalty to God that causes us to walk as faithful or godly ones.
And to walk humbly – showing a humble walk with God.
There is another disturbing movement happening on the earth. It would serve us well to be aware of it.
There is a growing apostasy on the earth.
Jesus asked a question.
Knowing the events that must occur before His return we can see why God will shorten the days.
So what is causing me to look at this subject? Is it civil unrest and racism?
Is it the pandemic and the approaching economic challenges? Is it the increase of tornadoes, earthquakes in unusual regions?
Well, yes and no. What really is causing my concern is the repeated pattern of turning away. Those who carry the label “Christian“ decide that they don’t really believe in God.
I first heard the rumblings in August of last year (2019). Marty Sampson, a singer, and songwriter with Hillsong decided he didn’t believe in God.
How sad. He wrote some heartfelt songs. And now he doesn’t believe in the God that inspired them?
This was just days after author Joshua Harris announced that he didn’t consider himself a Christian. He wrote books on dating. He was then in the process of divorcing his wife.
Campus Crusade, now known as Cru, had a couple of leaders that established their own YouTube channel. Their names are Rhett and Link.
Early this year they have come out to proclaim that they don’t believe in God either. Men who were leading others to know God, supposedly through Christ, no longer believe.
In the past two weeks, Jonathan Steingard has proclaimed the same thing. He was with Hawk Nelson and helped write the song Drops in the Ocean. Something is wrong!
How do we acknowledge apostasy?
God tells us through His Spirit that there will be a falling away. We know that apostasy is in the earth. People are drawn away by their own desires.
God gave us a conscience. It is the inner sense of what is right or wrong in our conduct or motives. It moves us toward right action.
But here Paul tells us that those turning from faith in God have a seared conscience. They are unwilling to listen and learn from their conscience.
Simply put, their conscience is desensitized and rendered ineffective because of their rebellion against the gospel. More specifically – they are against God.
Let me state the obvious. We are in a spiritual war for hearts and minds.
Don’t fool yourself. This isn’t a matter of opinion it is a matter of life and death.
Hebrews shows us a picture of falling away from God’s grace.
This is concerning and brings the question. If we turn away from what we know is right are we able to return? Maybe, if there is an opportunity for repentance…
How Do We Sound The Alarm?
We need to watch out for one another. We need to be in relationships that promote following Christ (discipleship).
I have talked on discipleship many times. In fact, I left us with these questions two weeks ago.
- Who is your somebody that helps you grow in Christ?
- Who is your somebody that you are helping to grow in Christ?
- Who is your somebody to whom you are sharing Christ?
By keeping our focus on growing and going in Christ, we hold fast to our faith in Him.
In these relationships, we can notice changes in our brothers and sisters. We can have conversations as to what is going on in their hearts.
By being in a community of believers we can help each other. When someone is being pulled from the truth we can sound the alarm.
How do we remain faithful?
First of all, we need to recognize that we are in a war. As the accuser’s time grows short his attacks will intensify.
We need spiritual discernment. We can ask for this because distinguishing between spirits is a gift of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 12:10).
John tells us that we must distinguish between THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH AND THE SPIRIT OF ERROR.
We must identify the voice we are hearing. Is it the voice of truth or the voice of the accuser?
We must then take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.
This is something each one of us must do. No one can do it for you because it takes an act of your will.
I’ll close with this – pursue holiness. The people of God are called to be holy because He is holy.
We must allow the Holy Spirit to sanctify us. We purify ourselves by submitting and obeying what He commands.
As we cooperate with Him, He sets us apart for His work.
What does God require of us? He wants us to act justly, to love faithfulness, and show kindness to people. He wants us to walk humbly with Him.
We must acknowledge that apostasy is in the earth. We have a responsibility to stand and to help others to stand.
We must sound the alarm. We are in a spiritual war and it is a matter of life and death. We need to watch out for one another.
We must remain faithful. We need to identify the voices we are hearing and discern if it is from God or the accuser. And then we need to take those thoughts captive to obey Christ.
Lastly, we need to cooperate with the Holy Spirit and be holy. He will prepare us for every good work to fulfill God’s purpose.
